Plants – Unravelling

This drawing was inspired by the introduction to David Quammen’s book The Song of the Dodo. The degradation of ecosystems is compared to the unravelling of a richly beautiful Persian carpet. It is based on an ancient Kazakh floral pattern carpet. The flowers in the carpet’s design have been substituted for stylised versions of endangered plants. La “alfombra” se está descoloriendo en partes y comenzando a deshilacharse…

Heritage is a set of 12 printed postcards displayed in a postcard rack. Reproductions of paintings from a Western cultural heritage were digitally manipulated to form two sets of postcards, Excision and Restoration. In the Excision series, a wild animal is cleanly removed from a painting as an analogy to the loss of species from the natural world. There are few depictions of wild animals in Western art so the Restoration series adds, or restores, an animal to an ‘environment’. Excision – Delacroix, Rousseau, Hessalius, Cranach, Landseer, Marc. Restoration – Manet, Van Gogh, Gainsborough, Cezanne, Botticelli, Monet
